Goethe A2 Exam – Free Goethe A2 Sample Tests
The Goethe A2 Exam is the German language test for the second level of the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages (CEFR). The Goethe A2 Exam follows the Goethe A1 Exam and precedes the Goethe B1 Exam. This means the Goethe Institute Test A2 is more difficult than the A1 test and easier than B1.
When you start with the Goethe A2 Exam, you will immediately notice that both the listening and reading texts are longer than in the Goethe A1 Exam. This should not discourage you under any circumstances. While it is longer than the Goethe A1 Exam and the tasks may seem more complex, if you practice sufficiently, you can easily obtain Goethe Certificate A2.
Why is the Goethe A2 Exam so important for German learners?
One of the fatal mistakes German learners make is underestimating the German Test A2. Even if you are aiming for a higher German language certificate, you must take at least one German Test A2 Sample. Here are some advantages:
- You test your language skills and evaluate your learning strategy after completing the A2 German course.
- You can identify areas for improvement in your language profile.
- There is vertical similarity between the Goethe A2 Exam and Goethe B1 Exam tests. This means you learn the A2 test requirements and, in doing so, become familiar with part of the Goethe-Institut B1 test.
- As part of the Goethe A2 Exam, you will acquire problem-solving techniques and strategies and optimize your time management.
- You will become accustomed to the exam atmosphere and overcome your exam anxiety and stress.
Goethe Certificate A2
You will receive this certificate if you pass the Goethe A2 Exam. The Goethe Institute offers two versions of the Goethe Institute A2 test. In addition to the regular Goethe Institute A2 test, children and young people under 16 can take the A2 "Fit in German" exam. Like all other Goethe certificates, the Goethe Certificate A2 does not have an expiration date. However, the more recent the certificate, the more meaningful your Goethe Certificate A2 will be.
Goethe A2 Exam Structure
The Goethe A2 Exam consists of a written module (reading, listening, writing) and an oral module.
Reading Comprehension A2
Reading Comprehension A2 comprises four different sections, which you must complete within 30 minutes. In these four sections, you will answer 20 sub-questions based on a typical media text, an event program, a correspondence, and a collection of advertisements. At level A2, German learners must be able to:
- understand short, simple texts that relate to everyday situations.
- Understand important information in advertisements, short letters and emails, timetables, menus, forms, and simple newspaper or forum texts, and extract specific information from them.
- Recognize and understand frequently used words and expressions from areas such as family, work, shopping, leisure, and the environment.
- Understand simple personal communications such as invitations, messages, and simple descriptions of people, places, and events.
- Grasp the general meaning of a short text, even if not every word is known.
Listening Comprehension A2
In Listening Comprehension A2, similar to Reading Comprehension, there are four sections and 20 sub-questions. In Section 1, you will hear several pieces of information, in Section 2 a conversation, in Section 3 four individual conversations, and in Section 4 a radio interview. As an A2 exam candidate, you will be able to:
- Understand coherent texts in the form of short conversations and interviews.
- Extract details and specific information from conversations.
- To follow simple everyday conversations and understand the main points.
- To handle various familiar everyday situations at work, during leisure time, or while traveling.
- To understand simple announcements and messages in clear German.
A2 Writing
In 30 minutes, you will complete two parts of the A2 writing exam. The first part involves writing a short text message (SMS) on three given items. The second part consists of a semi-formal email using three given bullet points. You have 30 minutes for both parts. At level A2, you must be able to:
- Write coherent texts and personal messages as emails, letters, or text messages.
- Describe information, experiences, reasons, and explanations in a simple way.
- Logically connect several sentences and use simple conjunctions such as "and," "but," and "because."
Speaking A2
The oral module takes place with another candidate and lasts up to 15 minutes. In the first part, you must ask your partner four questions using four cards and answer their questions.
In the second part, you give a short monologue about yourself on a given topic and four different bullet points. In the third part, you have to have a conversation with your partner and arrange a meeting. Before you begin the Goethe A2 Exam, you should familiarize yourself with the following requirements:
- not only answering individual questions, but also holding longer conversations and connecting several sentences using language.
- giving simple information about yourself and familiar topics in a coherent manner.
- handling everyday situations at work, while shopping, at the doctor's office, etc., using language.
- expressing simple wishes, opinions, and needs.
- briefly describing experiences and events.
Under Exam Tips A2, you will find detailed information, advice, solutions, and potential difficulties for each exam section.

Can I retake part of the Goethe A2 Exam?
The Goethe A2 Exam is not a modular exam where you are not allowed to retake or skip specific modules.
How is grammar assessed in the Goethe A2 Exam?
Grammar is assessed in both the written and oral sections. The assessment system is based on specific grammar criteria. If your grammar skills are below A2 level, this will automatically result in a point deduction.
What topics are covered in the Goethe A2 Test?
There are three common, broadly recurring themes in the Goethe A2 test: work, travel, and leisure. These, along with other topics, appear in the four skills sections. The Goethe A2 practice tests provide an overview of these topics.
How difficult is the Goethe A2 test compared to A1?
The Goethe A2 test is definitely more difficult than the Goethe A1 test. A German learner with A1 language skills will hardly be able to pass the Goethe A2 test. First, all A2 test sections, the reading and listening texts, are longer and more complex. Second, to pass the Goethe A2 test, you have three requirements instead of just one requirement in A1. In the Goethe A2 test, you must complete all sections, achieve at least 45 out of 75 points in the written exam, and at least 15 out of 25 available points in the oral exam. In total, you need to achieve at least 60% to pass. In the Goethe A1 test, you only need to achieve 60% overall.
Third, in the Goethe A1 test, you only have to understand individual words, expressions, and pieces of information. In contrast, in the Goethe A2 test, you have to understand the general meaning and context.
What is the difference between A1 and A2?
A1 German learners can make simple statements, ask and answer basic questions, understand very short texts, and write simple, short emails.
A2 German learners, in addition to the skills described above under A1, can understand and conduct short conversations, exchange information, handle familiar situations linguistically, understand long reading and listening texts, and write longer response texts.
How does the Goethe A2 test work?
Course participants first complete the written module (reading comprehension, listening comprehension, writing), and only then does the oral module begin. When and with whom you participate in the oral module depends on the organization of the test center.
Is A2 sufficient for everyday life in Germany?
German skills at level A2 allow you to manage everyday life. A2 skills are not sufficient for carrying out professional activities or understanding complex content.
Is the Goethe A2 Exam PDF useful?
Goethe A2 exam PDFs are rare, often outdated, and cumbersome to evaluate. The Goethe-Institut website contains a current Goethe A2 model test PDF. Furthermore, most Goethe examination centers are switching to digital exams. This fact forces you to get used to digital exams.
In what format is the Goethe A2 Exam test administered?
The Goethe-Institut A2 test is offered at many test centers not only in paper form but also digitally. The advantages are that the listening texts have better audio quality and the assessment is completed more quickly than usual.
